EARLY SIGNS YOUR BODY IS GETTING READY FOR LABOUR Mama, as your due date gets closer, you may start noticing some changes in your body and begin wondering: “Is labour about to start?” Sometimes, your body gives you little signs that it is preparing for labour. Here are some things you may notice: 1. YOUR BABY DROPS LOWER You may notice that your belly looks lower or that your baby feels like they have moved down into your pelvis. You may breathe a little easier, but you may also feel more pressure around your pelvis and bladder. 2. MORE PRESSURE DOWN BELOW As your baby moves further down, you may feel increased pressure around your pelvis, vagina and rectum. You may also find yourself going to the toilet more often. 3. MORE VG DISCHARGE You may notice an increase in VG discharge as your body prepares for labour. You may also pass your mucus plug. It can come out as thick, sticky or jelly-like mucus and may sometimes contain a small amount of blood. This is sometimes called a “show.” Passing your mucus plug does not always mean your baby will be born immediately. Labour may still be days away, especially if you are not having regular contractions. 4. PERIOD-LIKE CRAMPS OR LOWER BACKACHE Some women experience cramping or an aching feeling in the lower back as labour approaches. 5. CONTRACTIONS START TO CHANGE This is one of the most important signs. You may begin having contractions that become stronger, longer and more regular. Unlike Braxton Hicks contractions, true labour contractions usually continue despite changing position, resting or drinking water. And as labour progresses, they generally become closer together and more intense. 6. YOUR WATER MAY BREAK Your waters may come as a big gush or as a continuous trickle of fluid. If you think your waters have broken, contact your maternity unit or healthcare provider for advice, even if contractions have not started yet. 7. YOU MAY FEEL DIFFERENT Some women notice changes such as increased tiredness, restlessness, difficulty sleeping or simply feeling that “something is different.” But Mama, not every woman will experience all these signs. Some women have several warning signs before labour. Others go into labour with very little warning. And please don’t rely on things like having diarrhea, losing your appetite or feeling unusually energetic as definite signs that labour is about to start. These can happen for other reasons too. WHEN SHOULD YOU CONTACT YOUR HEALTHCARE PROVIDER? Seek urgent assessment if you have: Heavy vaginal bleeding, reduced or absent baby movements, severe abdominal pain, severe headache or other concerning symptoms. Also contact your maternity unit if your waters break, or if you are having regular painful contractions that are becoming stronger and closer together. Mama, remember: Your due date is an estimate, not an appointment. Your body may start preparing for labour before the actual labour begins. So don’t panic every time you notice a new sensation. Listen to your body, keep your hospital bag ready, know when to contact your maternity team, and most importantly… Don’t ignore anything that feels unusual or concerning. Your baby is getting ready to meet you. #fyp #SignsOfLabour #LabourAndDelivery #PregnancyTips #pregnancycare
