7 Zion mistakes I made so you don't have to MISTAKE #1 X We arrived too late. The visitor-center parking lot was already full. ✓ Arrive early—or plan to park in Springdale and take the shuttle. MISTAKE #2 X I didn't study the shuttle system first. During shuttle season, you can't drive your car along Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. ✓ Check the route, stops and last departure before you go. MISTAKE #3 X I underestimated how wet we would get in The Narrows. Assume your feet and clothes will get wet. ✓ Rent proper Narrows gear and bring dry socks, shoes and a change of clothes. MISTAKE #4 X We didn't plan The Narrows around our other hikes. ✓ Do it first, then change into dry clothes—or save it for your final hike. Walking around wet afterward is not fun! MISTAKE #5 X I didn't realize how much transportation planning we needed. A rental car helped us get from the airport to our hotel and explore outside the main canyon. But inside Zion Canyon, expect to use the park shuttle during shuttle season. MISTAKE #6 Know which park pass you actually need. Zion's standard vehicle pass already covers up to 7 days. Consider an annual pass only if you'll visit more national parks or return later. MISTAKE #7 X I underestimated the heat and elevation gain. Coming from flat Houston, it humbled us! ✓ Bring plenty of water, wear sunscreen and proper hiking shoes, and take shade, hydration and breathing breaks. One last thing: Check the weather, trail conditions and flash-flood risk before every hike— especially The Narrows. Save this before your Zion trip. Which mistake would you have made?
