For NICU Awareness Month, we are going back to the basics, but not the basic basics….these are 10 diagnoses I think every NICU nurse should understand, regardless of your level of care. The goal is not just to memorize what RDS, NEC, PDA, IVH, PPHN, BPD, ROP, HIE, apnea, and neonatal sepsis stand for. For each one, I want you to think about 3 things: 1️⃣ What is actually happening physiologically? 2️⃣ What might that look like at the bedside? 3️⃣ Why does our nursing care matter? Because once you understand the physiology, the care starts to connect. ✅CPAP has a reason. ✅Gentle handling has a reason. ✅Watching oxygen trends has a reason. ✅Noticing that a baby is suddenly having more events has a reason.
