This year a “very strong” El Niño has the current forecast of being unusually aggressive with a >90% chance of a very strong event in fall/winter 2026–27, and a 69% chance that Oct–Dec 2026 reaches what NOAA considers a historic-strength threshold. 🍂What this means for the autumn season is that a very strong El Niño can shift Japan toward warmer winter conditions. That doesn’t mean every day is warm, but the odds of sustained cold can be reduced since Japan historically tends to experience warmer winters during El Niño, although regional differences are substantial. 🌸This is important to keep in mind for Spring since a warm winter followed by a warm early spring can potentially result in earlier cherry-blossom development. #japanweather #japan #elniño #japantrave
