If you're looking for a ryokan in Japan with a private open air onsen in your room, delicious kaiseki dinner and breakfast, heated dining room floors, and futons on traditional tatami floors, you need to stay at Ryokan Hakone Ginyu in Hakone, Japan. This is my personal all time favourite ryokan that has yet to be topped. Outside of the ryokan there is so much that you can do, like taking a ropeway to Owakudani to get your hands on the black egg that is cooked in the sulfur water of the volcanic vents and is supposed to be so good for you that they give you 7 more years of life. And if you keep following that ropeway to the end of it, it will lead you to Togendai Port and then you can go on to the Hakone Pirate Ship and pass the famous Hakone Shrine. And if you're very lucky you can actually see Mount Fuji at several different points during this entire excursion. My overall opinion on this weekend getaway is that Ryokan Hakone Ginyu's hospitality is unmatched. The ryokan is beautiful, the amenities are luxury class, the food and staff are unforgettable, and the area has so much to explore. If you're having a hard time finding a traditional Japanese ryokan, I really hope you consider this place. Our total for two adults for two nights for all of our breakfast and multi-course dinners, including access to all the public onsens and extra room service charges, came out to 222,000 yen (US$1,394), which I agree is pricey, but I do feel like it was worth all of the money that was spent.
