You don't necessarily have to sand your canvases when you're just gessoing. I just like to so that the surface is smooth. Right now, it's a rough surface. I've done two layers or three layers of gesso. In between each layer, I sand it and then add the next layer and then sand it. Um again, it's not like necessary. It just gives you a smooth surface to work out of. I wish I had like a a sandy canvas with me to give you a sound example of it, but yeah, that's why I sand in my canvases.
