1. “I don’t know.” Instead say: “That’s a great question. I’d like to think about that for a moment.” It’s OK to pause. You don’t have to answer immediately. If you truly don’t know: “I haven’t encountered that specifically, but let me give you an example of how I approached something I didn’t know, got up to speed and applied what I learned.” 2. “I don’t have any weaknesses.” Be self-aware. Identify a weakness and show how you’ve improved. “Earlier in my career, I struggled with delegating. I’ve learned what requires my involvement and where I need to empower my team.” 3. “I can do anything.” “My background is really strong in X and Y. From what you’ve shared, it sounds like that’s exactly where you need someone to come in and make an impact.” Don’t try to be everything. Be the solution. 4. Badmouthing my last company or boss. “I’ve learned a lot in my current role, and I’m ready for my next challenge. I’m looking for an opportunity where I can bring my experience in X and Y while continuing to grow in Z.” Keep the answer focused on what you’re moving toward, not what you’re trying to get away from. 5. “I don’t have experience in that area.” “While I don’t have direct experience with X, I do have experience with Y. Here’s how that experience translates into what you need…” Then give evidence. 6. “I’m a hard worker.” Anyone can say they’re a hard worker. Don’t just list off soft skills. Give proof. “I was brought into X, identified Y, and within six months I was able to [specific result].” Use your results, accomplishments and examples to show them. Don’t tell them. Prove it. 7. “No, I don’t have any questions.” Ask strategic questions that help you evaluate the position, hiring manager and company. Your questions show genuine interest and that you came prepared. Go beyond the basics like, “What are the benefits?” You’re interviewing them too. Not everyone is naturally good at interviewing. Being a natural interviewer doesn’t automatically make you the better candidate or mean you’ll get the job. Interviewing is a skill. If you’re walking into interviews without preparing, start here.
