My 5 month old is about starting having solids so I thought I'd make him something. I grabbed this bone marrow from Coles and I popped a little bit of olive oil on it. Put in the oven at 200 degrees for 20 minutes. Once that was fully cooked, I scooped out all of the bone marrow and don't forget the stuff that's on the tray too because that's all goodness. I scooped all that out and popped it to the side and let it cool for about an hour. I then broke up all the bones and popped them into my slow cooker with some water. I covered the bones until they were just covered and let them sit for 24 hours. This is the bone marrow an hour later in the fridge and make sure you let it cool fully before doing this. But I whipped it up with an electric mixer and then I gave it a little mix to make sure I got all the sides. And then I had this mold that I got from Kmart, which is the perfect size for babies. Once they're ready to start having solids, what I'll do is I'll pop one of these out and let them completely defrost. I'll pop them in a little baby spoon for him so he can feed himself. After letting the bones cook in the slow cooker on low for 24 hours, I then strained it all and then I scooped it out and put it into this big bowl that I popped into the fridge. I let that sit in the fridge for 24 hours. I then had this thick layer on top, which is called beef tallow. You can use for like roasting potatoes, some people use it on their skin, but my daughter has quite severe eczema and I don't want to pop this on her skin just in case she has a reaction because it's not completely purified. So I'll just use it for my potatoes instead to make really crispy potatoes or even on some steak. Underneath the beef tallow you're left with bone broth. So I ended up popping this into a jar, which you can leave in the fridge for up to 5 days. But I'm making a slow cooked dinner tomorrow night. So I've popped it in the jar, please excuse me dripping this all over the bench. But I popped it in the fridge and I'm going to be using it in the slow cooker tomorrow night for dinner. I've popped it in the jar and I'm going to be using it in the slow cooker tomorrow night for dinner.
