Artist Joost Benthem creates conceptual works that play with ordinary objects, visual associations and absurd transformations, often finding new meanings in materials that already exist. For his ongoing Infinite Ice Creams project, Benthem collects stones from different places and attaches wooden sticks to them, transforming naturally shaped rocks into objects that immediately resemble ice cream bars. The intervention is deliberately minimal. As Benthem puts it: “Some stones don't need to be sculpted. They just need a stick.” Their colors, textures and irregular surfaces become the “flavors,” while their geological origin gives each object its own identity. Individual pieces are named after the locations where the stones were found, with examples from Roermond, Médano, Bergen aan Zee and Abrigos. A volcanic version was created from a stone found at Barranco de Badajoz in Tenerife in 2026. #artist #art #niche #rock #cream
