Former Jagex developer Andrew Lakeman, known to RuneScape players as “Mod Jed” has been sentenced after using his employee access to target valuable player accounts. Lakeman stole virtual gold and other in-game items before selling them on the black market through cryptocurrency dealers, ultimately banking more than £364,829. He received a three-year prison sentence suspended for two years, alongside 150 hours of unpaid work and a 25-day rehabilitation requirement. Authorities are now attempting to recover the money. The case also helped establish that virtual game currency can legally qualify as property capable of being stolen in the UK.
