Never put your phone loose in this tray, ever. I've worked as cabin crew for over 5 years and this is one of those tiny mistakes people because they're distracted and rushing. You're taking off, emptying your pockets, grabbing your laptop, watching your bags, and your phone is just sitting there in an open tray. That's the problem. Security checkpoints are chaotic. Trays get mixed up, and it only takes one second for someone to pick up the wrong phone, accidentally or otherwise. By the time you realize the scanner and the person behind you could be halfway down the terminal. So before your bag goes through, put your phone, wallet and passport inside a zipped compartment of your carry-on. Phone in the bag. Zip it up. Then send it through. Keep all your valuables together. Stay with your bag until it enters the scanner. Then collect it as soon as it comes out. Don't leave anything loose in the tray unless you absolutely have to.
