“Listen to your body” might be some of the most useless advice we give chronically ill people. There. I said it. My body told me to stay in bed until after 5 PM yesterday. It tells me not to exercise. Not to go out. Not to push through the fatigue. Not to do the thing that might make tomorrow hurt more. And sometimes? My body is absolutely right. But when you’ve been sick for years, your body can say STOP so often that “listen to your body” stops being simple advice. Because how am I supposed to know the difference between: “My body genuinely needs rest.” and “My body has gotten so used to protecting me that I need to gently remind it that we can do things.” I don’t think chronically ill people need to be told to “listen to our bodies.” I think we need better conversations about how the hell we’re supposed to interpret what they’re saying.
