Why it worked

The creator tapped into a shared, often unspoken, experience of economic hardship and societal pressure that contrasted with the idealized narrative of "millennial optimism," resonating with a broad audience who felt excluded from that narrative.

Summary

The creator challenges the notion of "millennial optimism" by sharing personal anecdotes about financial struggles, body image issues, and the harsh realities faced by those not in the middle class during that era. The post contrasts the perceived optimism with coping mechanisms and highlights the inaccessibility of trendy fashion and lifestyle choices for many.

Structure

1Introduction to "millennial optimism" and its limitations
2Financial barriers to participating in millennial trends
3The disconnect between perceived optimism and underlying struggles

Original caption

This trend of “millennial optimism” belongs to people who could afford it back then. That wasn’t reality for most of us. I loved the fashion but couldn’t afford it, and I was fat, so it wouldn’t have existed even if I could have. Let’s not gild a messy past.

Product placement

Jimmy Beans Wool ACTS - it is a store where products are sold, and a discount code is provided for it. Removing it would change what happens in the video because the call to action would be incomplete. JBWAmbassador APPEARS - it is a hashtag indicating sponsorship, but it does not ACT. Removing it would not change what happens in the video.

Y'all are missing the point of "millennial optimism." If you weren't middle class or above, there was no optimism. There was coping. Those Toms shoes in so many pictures would have cost me 8 hours of work. Doc Martens, 12 hours of work. The SLR cameras that were hipster staples were a whole paycheck. I didn't have that stuff. Even this background song people are using isn't optimistic! It was about grieving people who had died and wanting to join them! We were masters of putting a cheerful enough face on the existential horror that people looked away from the pain. This "blazer over a band t-shirt" look was for a job interview, bc I was making $8/hour as an assistant manager at Radio Shack, and Journeys was paying $9. The store manager complimented my style and then hired a size 2 blonde, because being a size 14 was a cardinal sin back then. One thing we did do, though? We drank. The reason stomp-clap music goes so hard with drunk people is because we were all drunk then. The hipsters had craft beer and the party kids had flavored vodka, but we were all bombed out of our minds. We weren't hopeful, we were hung over. 😆
