There are two types of progress on a construction project: Actual progress. And “I updated Procore” progress. One moves the job forward. The other makes the dashboard look reassuring. I’m not anti-software. Far from it. A good PM software can make a project run better. But somewhere along the way, construction management lost the plot. It’s drifting from managing construction to managing the software that manages the construction. Daily logs. Submittals. RFIs. Photos. Meetings. Reports. Password resets. Another workflow. Another required field. Documentation is King. I get it. I even preach document, document, document. But while you’re busy double entering updates on log after log, the superintendent is trying to figure out why the steel isn’t there and the foreman needs an answer so his crew can keep moving. Software should support the work. It should exist only to make the lives better for the men and women doing the work. The work should not exist to feed the tool. What’s the most ridiculous “admin for the sake of admin” task you’ve been required to do on a project?
