An animal family, a landmark, a train. For illustrator Connie Kang, any of them can become a cast of characters. Working from photographs, she translates shapes, colors, poses, and expressions into human figures. An animal’s markings can inspire an outfit, while its posture suggests a personality or an entire scene. In her family illustrations, an opossum carrying its young becomes a mother with children clinging to her. The details change, but the crowded, slightly chaotic energy stays wonderfully familiar. Her imagination extends beyond animals, too. Buildings, landmarks, and trains become people, with their distinctive shapes and colors finding a new life in clothing and silhouettes. Part of the fun is looking back at the original photo and spotting what she kept. Once you see the connection, it’s hard to unsee the character.
