The “Sentiero dell’Amore” (Path of Love) [also known as the Mergoli-Vignanotica Trail] is one of Italy’s most beautiful coastal hikes. Here’s everything you need to know to do it: LOCATION: It’s situated on the coast between Mattinata and Vieste. The trail connects Mergoli Bay (Baia delle Zagare) to Vignanotica Beach. There’s no dedicated parking, you have to find a space on the road. THE TRAIL: * Length: Approx. 3 km (one way). * Duration: About 1 hour each way. * Difficulty: Outbound = Easy. Return = a bit more challenging. If you go down to vignanotica beach, it’s a steep climb back up! MY TIPS: 1. NO FLIP-FLOPS: Even though it ends at the beach, the trail consists of pebbles and dirt. Wear sneakers with good grip. 2. PARKING: You can leave your car near the trail entrance along the SP53 road (search for “Inizio Sentiero Mergoli-Vignanotica” on Maps). Arrive early during peak season!!! 3. WATER & SUN: The trail is almost entirely exposed to the sun, and there are no drinking fountains. Bring at least 1.5L of water and sunscreen. 4. BEST TIME TO GO: Early morning to enjoy the silence and the pastel colors of sunrise, or late afternoon to avoid the scorching summer heat. Better yet, visit during the off-season (May or October). 5. THE ULTIMATE REWARD: Once you reach Vignanotica, enjoy a swim beneath the white rock cliffs. It’s one of the most iconic spots in the “real” Puglia! Why do it? It’s the only way to admire the famous *Faraglioni* (sea stacks) of Baia delle Zagare from above, without paying for a boat tour or staying at the bay’s hotels.
