I am proud to announce that DoorDash will pay more than $131 million, the largest settlement for food delivery workers ever secured in American municipal history. The Mamdani administration just won a record $131.5 million settlement with DoorDash, and will provide relief to more than 260,000 delivery workers that the company has underpaid for years. Hundreds of workers are going to get more than $10,000. An investigation by the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection found that DoorDash paid workers below the minimum pay rate for years, In some cases, failing to compensate workers for weeks of work. In New York, delivery workers are supposed to be making $23 an hour plus tips. And DoorDash is doing this everywhere. I delivered a $381 catering order that was supposed to have a $76, almost $77 tip to it, and I got absolutely zero of that. What this order is going to do is not only require DoorDash to pay back what they underpaid workers, it's actually going to require them to pay additional damages back to workers. Sometimes we don't even have enough to pay the rent, so I believe this money will benefit us to pay our debts and buy some things for ourselves so that we can work much better. These companies claimed that raising worker wages would somehow hurt consumers. And as it turns out, that wasn't true. Many of the app companies predicted that the market would collapse, that the sky would fall, that New Yorkers would stop ordering food. Guess what? None of that has happened. What did happen is DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Grubhub didn't want to pay the minimum wage, so they stole from workers. It was corporate greed, not everyday people rejecting the idea of paying workers more. What this case shows is that when workers actually come together, when they stand alongside local government and say, no, we don't care what your algorithm says, if you're a delivery worker in the city of New York, you're entitled to $23 an hour. We can actually win victories over Big Tech. But the fight against corporate greed isn't over. Workers and those who represent them will need to keep fighting. And now, Zohran's administration has set them up for exactly that. At the end of the day, we are giving workers tools so that they have the power themselves to make sure these companies are following the law. And the administration isn't leaving it up to DoorDash to hold itself accountable. Workers will now have a tool to track their pay data themselves. This way, the Mamdani administration can ensure that DoorDash's own reporting is accurate. Delivery workers fought for years to make this happen, and this historic win shows that workers can take on even the most powerful corporations when governments stand on their side.
