If you can hear a voice inside your head, you can do something most people cannot. Try it right now. Think of a sentence, or read the next few words in your head. Did you hear it? A voice reading it back to you, narrating it? If you did, you have what is called an inner voice. Your entire life, you assumed everyone experiences thoughts this way. They do not. A huge portion of people think in complete silence: no words, no narration, just pure thought with nothing spoken inside their head at all. And it gets stranger. Some people hear their thoughts in their own voice, exactly how they sound out loud. But a small number of people can hear their thoughts in any voice they choose—a stranger, a character, someone else entirely. Researchers studying this call it inner speech, and brain scans show people with a strong inner voice actually activate the same speech regions of the brain used when talking out loud, meaning part of your brain believes it is speaking even when you are completely silent. So if your mind has been narrating your entire life in a voice only you can hear, whose voice is it actually? And why does it sound exactly like you?
