I was busy studying at university while he was back in the village and town going out with other girls without me even knowing. Ben was one of those “I don’t care” boys back in secondary school. He kept to himself which made girls wonder what type of boy he was. I was lucky to get close to him because the librarian gave me a job helping in the library. That’s where I met him, always reading comics. He became a regular in the library and we quickly became friends, then friends with feelings, and eventually a couple. We were so obsessed with each other, I bet the school hated us. It happened that I was selected to study at a university outside my province while he didn’t get any offer. I got a part-time job and he was doing his small barber business, charging only K5 for haircuts. Whenever it was late, he would come and get me and take me to the bus stop before I went home. Every fortnight we would go to the beach and have some private moments together. He was so innocent to me that I thought every girl would wish they had a boyfriend like him. He had my TikTok, Instagram and Facebook. I completely trusted him and saw a life without him as nothing. When Christmas and New Year were getting closer, I made sure I spent more time with him because when the next year started I would leave for another province for my studies. When February came and I was about to leave for university, I wanted to meet him but my dad scolded me in front of my family. I cried and even spoke rudely to my dad. I didn’t get to see Ben, but before I left I asked him to remain faithful no matter the distance. To my surprise, Ben got a tattoo of my name on his chest, a really artistic one. I was so happy. I knew he was my future husband. My dad got my phone before I left, so I didn’t get to tell Ben to meet me at the airport. I left without seeing him. But after getting a new phone, we video called again. We even spoke every night at 9pm because Vodafone had free calls. Like I said, we were obsessed, so we did silly things over video calls and I would always tell him about my day. When I was with friends, I’d let him know, send him pictures and update him on everything I did. Boys at university asked me out but I blocked them. I was so in love with Ben and Ben alone. But no matter how long I dated him, he never posted me online. We had millions of pictures together, but he acted single on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook. My best friend said, “Hey, you’re studying away. Maybe your boyfriend has a girlfriend.” But I protected him. I even argued with my sisters for thinking badly about him. Eventually, during our video calls, he wouldn’t kiss the phone anymore. When I said “I love you” or told him he looked nice, he wouldn’t say it back. I thought he was tired, but I could feel something had changed. When he spoke to me late at night, it didn’t feel the same anymore. I slowly started thinking maybe he was losing feelings for me, so I danced for him on video calls and sent him reels just so my name would show in his DMs. It took him hours to reply until our 9pm routine of calling was no longer happening. If I called, he would never answer, and sometimes it made things worse because his phone would say busy, meaning he was talking to someone else. I loved him, but I felt like I was forcing him. So I texted him at 9pm the next day: “Ben, I’m so sorry I had to come to study and you lost feelings for me. All I wanted was to get a degree, help my family and eventually marry you. We could have been together, but maybe the distance was hard for you and you got yourself a new girlfriend. I don’t hate you, Ben. I’ll never hate you. I just regret arguing with my father because of you, and here I am studying while you’re going out with your girlfriends. I’m so sorry, Ben. Please take care of yourself and always remember you broke my heart in a way words can’t explain. It’s my fault I trusted you. Goodbye, Ben. I’ll never bother you again#fyp #emotionalstory #heartbreak
