More than 450,000 additional heat-related deaths could occur between June 2026 and February 2027 as an unusually powerful El Niño drives temperatures higher around the world, according to climate researchers. The projected toll includes around 3,500 additional heat deaths in the U.S., with tropical countries including Nigeria, Indonesia, Sudan, India and Brazil expected to be among the hardest hit. Scientists say the extreme heat is being intensified by an El Niño that has already surpassed previous temperature records and is expected to continue through the coming months. Researchers say measures such as better heat warnings, cooling centers and stronger protections for outdoor workers could help prevent some of the projected deaths. #weather #elnino #news #science #world
