Your jaw doesn't just open and close like a hinge, it actually moves in a much more complex way than most people realize🦴 The joint responsible for this is called the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, and it's one of the most unique joints in the entire body. Unlike a simple hinge joint like your elbow, the TMJ combines both a hinge motion and a gliding motion. When you open your mouth wide, your jawbone doesn't just rotate, it actually slides forward slightly as it opens. This combination of movement is what allows you to do things like chew, grind side to side, and open your mouth as wide as you do, motions a simple hinge joint could never achieve on its own. Because of this complexity, the TMJ is also prone to its own set of issues, clicking, popping, pain, or restricted movement, often referred to as TMJ disorder, or TMD. This can be caused by things like teeth grinding, jaw clenching, stress, or misalignment, and it's actually a fairly common issue a lot of people deal with without realizing there's an actual joint problem behind it🩺 It's wild how much complex engineering goes into something as simple as opening your mouth🌴 ✅Follow @drdavidabbasi for More Daily Medical Content & Health Tips!😷Schedule a consultation in Delray Beach!
