If you want to do well at university and become one of the top student, you have to learn how to play the game. The sad part is that most students, they come to uni and leave without even understanding that there was a game to play and there were rules to follow. I was one of those students that started off as just an average student that was barely passing until I started applying the rules of the game. So in this video, it's going to be a long one, but I'm going to teach you some of the rules that you should apply and what you should do in order to become one of the top student. Rule No. 1 will actually shock you. This is a lesson that I learned from my father actually, and he was right. Say hello to your lecturer. Do not be that student that will meet the lecturer on campus, bump into them in the corridor in the department, you look away and you run because you're shy or because you don't want to, you know, just interact with them. Say hello to them. Just talk to them. It doesn't have to be a long conversation. You don't have to be friend, but just make sure that they know your name, greet them, be kind and smile. This will actually go a long way. I never understood it until I became a lecturer myself, and when we sit in those rooms, we sometimes discuss student. You may be in a situation where you need a recommendation letter, you need some type of intervention, and the moment we mention the name in the room, everyone will be like, oh, this one is always nice, is always polite and never causes trouble. What can we do? Okay, let's send a letter, let's do this. You never know who's speaking in rooms where you cannot be there. Right. No. 2 also just as important, try your best in the most genuine way to surround yourself with a top performing student. And to me, this is one of those things that really changed my life. The moment I join a university, the moment I join an academic setting, I find the top student and if they are nice people, I will genuinely pursue that relationship and friendship with them because I know when I'm friends with them, if I hang out with them, one, I'll be inspired, two, I'll be disciplined just like them, and three, I'll pick up on the good habit. For example, with my top performing friends, we never sat for three hours just talking about soccer or anything else. No, because after like an hour or two, they have to be like, oh, I need to rush and finish this assignment, I need to rush and go and study. Do you want us to go to library together? And those are the small habit that actually helped me keep up the pace and it benefited me before anyone else. No. 3 is you have to offer to teach your friends. I know this may seem awkward, but if you actually get organized, you know earlier in the semester, you could become that guy. Whatever you feel like you're struggling with, tell them, can I have you guys for 30 minutes or 40 40 minutes like on a random Friday? I'll try to teach you physics, I'll try to teach you chemistry. What it will do, it will condition your mind to start thinking like a lecturer, and something that you've thought well to your friends is something that you answer well during an exam. And No. 4, offer to lead group assignment. I don't know if this has been proven scientifically, but my entire academic journey, those that led responsibly group assignment ended up somewhere great in life. I don't know, I can't prove it, but all I can say is that it gives you sense of responsibility. And No. 2, those group assignments or those assignment would determine your mark as well. So you want to be in charge of that so that the quality of the work represent what you stand for. Next No. 5, sit in the first five row in class. It does not have to be the first two rows, but sit somewhere in front because it will save you from a lot of trouble. I've said this before, just sit there, it will allow you to focus, you you are less likely to be on your phone and you're more likely to engage because you feel like somebody is watching you. So condition yourself for success. No. 6 is when you get towards the end of your degree and you reach that phase where you are in your third year, this is where in recess sessions, in in holidays, you have to reach out to companies, but offer them the opportunity to have you work for free. Do not even place it as an internship, say I'll bring my own lunch and I will, you know, figure out my own transport for two weeks. Can I come and shadow someone? Can I come and work for free? In fact, financially it may seems as if you are working for free, but you're actually gaining a lot if you can afford to do this because one, you can actually get to experience how it feels like to be in that condition. No. 2, you are actually building a network outside your university. And those are the people that if and when you behave well in that place, even if they don't hire you, you can use them to give you a recommendation letter and you've branched out in a network of opportunity where you can tell your next employer that I spent five months, I spent six months, I spent two weeks in this institution, in this company, I did X, Y and Z. And that is experience that will go in your CV. And remember, in your CV, you don't have to write that you work there for free, you just have to say I have experience in this place and the other. So these are some of the rules that it helps you play the good game at uni so that you are an all round top student. Remember, I have not even mentioned getting good grades here because there's actually a lot that goes to it. Save this, send this to someone that you know who is at university or will go at university, and if you have other rules that have helped you, please feel free to drop them in the comment below.
