This simple building-block vehicle is a brilliant demonstration of iterative engineering: test the design, identify the failure, change the mechanism, and test again. At first, a basic four-wheeled design struggles as the gap becomes too wide. Instead of simply adding more power, the design changes its geometry and support points. Additional wheels and modified contact arrangements allow the vehicle to distribute its weight differently and maintain support as it crosses increasingly difficult obstacles. Then the challenge gets even harder: the vehicle has to travel along a narrow rod where tipping becomes the main problem. This is where center of mass and stability become critical. An object is more resistant to tipping when its center of gravity remains within its base of support. Lowering the center of mass can also reduce the gravitational torque that tends to rotate the vehicle when it is disturbed. That explains the clever hanging-weight solution near the end. By placing mass lower on the structure, the system behaves more like a stable pendulum, making it harder for the vehicle to rotate away from the support. The final wire-crossing setup takes the same principle even further: the geometry of the machine is redesigned around the constraint instead of trying to overpower it. That is one of the most important ideas in engineering. A failed prototype isn't necessarily a failure—it tells you what the next version needs to change. Test. Fail. Measure. Modify. Repeat. 🔧 💬 What would you change first if you had to improve this machine?
