Why it worked

The video succeeds by sharing a relatable, heartwarming personal story about a family gift, which makes the product purchase feel authentic and grounded rather than like a scripted advertisement.

Summary

The creator visits a TJ Maxx to purchase a pair of FRYE boots that her son gifted her money for. She explains that she is buying them now to ensure they don't sell out, even though she plans to wait until Christmas to wear them.

Structure

1Creator arrives at TJ Maxx
2Explains the backstory of the gift from her son
3Mentions the deal she made regarding Christmas dinner
4Confirms the boots are being held at the counter

5Expresses excitement about the purchase

Product placement

FRYE (a) ACTS — the creator is at a store specifically to purchase these boots, which are the subject of the video. TJ Maxx (b) APPEARS — the store location where the filming takes place; removing it would not change the fact that the creator is buying boots.

Hi everybody. Look where I am. Do you know why I'm back here? I'm so excited. I was talking to my son on the phone today and I was telling him about the boots and he sent me $200 to come and get these for a Christmas present that he and his wife are going to give me for Christmas. And then I made a deal. I said, well, that's too much for a Christmas present, so I'll buy all the Christmas dinner ingredients and all that when they come. So anyway, oh wait, I'm trying to go back to the shoes, but they're holding them at the counter for me. So anyway, I'm going to get my boots, you guys, and I promised him I go, okay, here's the thing. It's hot here in San Diego, I'm not ready to wear them, but I just didn't want to miss out on them, like they're going to be gone. But I won't wear them. I'll I'll let you guys wrap them and I'll open them for Christmas and then I'll have a Christmas present, so. I get my boots, you guys, I get my boots.
