I love Gen Z, but sometimes I genuinely struggle to understand their mindset. Yesterday, my little brother had an online interview scheduled for 2 p.m., but the company cancelled it unexpectedly. He assumed that was the end of it and went about his day. Then, at 10:15 p.m., his phone rang. He normally doesn't answer calls that late, especially from unknown numbers, but something made him pick up. It was the HR manager. HR: "Congratulations! We've decided to offer you the position." My brother was surprised. He thanked him and asked when he was expected to resume. Then the HR manager added something that completely changed the conversation. HR: "We were actually looking for someone who can work around the clock. Someone who doesn't need to be pushed to respond, even late at night. You picking up this call at 10:15 p.m. showed us exactly the kind of hustler mentality we need." My brother paused. Brother: "Does that mean there will be paid overtime when I'm working late?" HR: "Not necessarily. It doesn't happen every day. Just once in a while when there's something urgent." He asked a few more questions about working hours, availability and expectations. The HR manager basically confirmed that being reachable outside normal hours would be part of the culture, but there wouldn't be additional pay every time it happened. My brother thanked him. Then he rejected the offer. The crazy part? This is someone who has been job hunting for two years. No backup offer. No savings cushion. No other interview lined up. I asked him why he would turn down a job after waiting that long. He simply said, "Because if the first thing they do is test how available I am at night, imagine what six months there will look like." And honestly, that's where the Gen Z mindset confuses me. and this is very, very valid. As a proud member of the Gen Z community myself, this is something that I would have done if I'd not been job hunting for two years. But we need to understand that there are times where you have to do the most difficult, most inconvenient things just to get a step ahead. In Nigeria, we keep giving room for these HRs and the people to actually use the word 'hustle' for menial jobs and not pay accordingly. What do you mean you want to call by 10:15 and over the midnight and there is no extra pay for it when it is not the night shift? It's, it's the demand of the company. And the only thing I don't like, the only thing I don't like, I'm saying this is Nigerian mentality. I'm saying this is Nigerian mentality because abroad, I don't think this will happen. It happens. It happens abroad. We even see, we even see it in the movies where people work overtime and they are not paid for it. And it is legal. As long as you did it, they did not, the company did not force you to do it. Because they gave you a task and everything and you decided to make the sacrifice on your own. Like, you made the sacrifice on your own. But if you did not do that task, will you be queried? There are people that have committed to working overtime and they did not get extra pay for it because they made the choice to do it because the task they're doing. A lot of people just like to work and do their work well, even when they are not paid extra time or extra hours for it. But what I'm talking about here is the need to get put your head down and work.
