I'm sure you know this lady, Zainie scents popularly known as the perfume vendor in Abuja, but there's something she did recently that I think everybody who is trying to succeed needs to learn from. You might remember her when she first went viral for making those funny videos talking to perfumes on the shelves like they were human beings. Like, 'You, why are you still here? Your mates have gone since last month, want to remain here for the last two months?' People found this hilarious and the video went viral, but instead of chasing that virality like just one lucky moment, she grabbed the opportunity with both hands. She started creating content consistently, sometimes she will post up to five to ten times in a day. She was posting, selling, entertaining people and making sure the attention she had received did not just disappear. So recently, people challenged big creators for only supporting upcoming creators and hardly ever do the same for small business owners. Jidex, one of the creators known for supporting upcoming creators and giving people visibility, announced something. He said he was going to select five business owners, he would patronize them, promote their business for free and introduce them to his audience. Immediately, a lot of vendors started making videos tagging him, begging him to select them as one of the winners and Zainie Scents joined too. But this woman did not just make one video and stop. She practically turned it into a tournament, videos after videos, tag after tag. She kept begging people to help her repost and tag Jidex because she wanted to be selected, but Jidex picked another perfume vendor. Immediately, a lot of people felt Zainie's chances had reduced drastically because if someone is selecting just five business owners and he had already selected a perfume vendor, what are the chances he would select another one? But she refused to accept that. Her response was basically, he never said he cannot choose two perfume vendors, so she continued. But something bigger even happened. Jidex completed the five people he said he was originally going to choose and at that point everybody thought it was over, but she still did not give up. She continued making videos, continued tagging him, continued asking people to help her. Some people even started telling her that that is exactly why they don't participate in things like this because imagine doing all the work publicly and then not getting selected. The disappointment, the embarrassment, the feeling that all your effort was wasted, but I love her response. She said even if Jidex never picked her, the video she was making was getting views, she was getting followers, more people were discovering her business and she was getting sales from the attention. So even if she did not get the exact result she wanted, trying has already produced another result, so she kept going. She even sustained an injury while creating some of the videos and guess what? Jidex announced her as a winner. The same woman whose chances looked almost impossible after another perfume vendor had already been selected, the same woman who continued even after the original five slots were already completed, she still got picked. And that is why fear of failure should never stop you from trying. Sometimes, the thing stopping us is not even the failure itself, it is the shame of people seeing us try and not succeed. 'Eh, I want to try, but what if I don't win? What will people say? People will laugh at me. What if I put myself out there and nothing happens?' But what if something does happen? Even if you don't get the exact thing you were chasing, your efforts may open another door for you. You might gain visibility, you might attract customers, you might discover another opportunity entirely, you might even meet just one person that will change your entire life. But if you refuse to try because you are afraid of failing publicly, then you don't even give yourself the chance to find out. Zainie Scents kept going even when the odds became smaller, she kept going even when people thought it was over and eventually the result she had been fighting for came. Congratulations to Zainie Scents and if you are currently chasing something and it looks like your chances are getting smaller, don't be too quick to count yourself out. As long as there's still room to try, keep showing up because sometimes, resilience is refusing to reject yourself before the opportunity rejects you. I hope you understand. I'll see you on my next videos. Ire o.
