There's a sophisticated impersonation scam in which criminals pose as real federal agents and use spoofed government phone numbers. My name is Heizer and today we're breaking down another scam you need to know about. Let's talk about it. The scammers can use the name of an actual agent, meaning victims who call a field office to check may be told the person really does work there without confirming they made the call. Fraudsters may then accuse victims of crimes and demand money to avoid an arrest, using threats and pressure to keep them on the phone and stop them as seeking help. The FBI said it received nearly 61,000 complaints about impersonation scams between January 2025 and July 2026 with reported losses topping $1.6 billion.
