thedisturbingpage VIEWER WARNING: This story involves the death and abuse of a child. SHE WAS ONLY FOUR YEARS OLD... AND THE PEOPLE AROUND HER FAILED TO KEEP HER SAFE. On March 12, 2016, four-year-old Leiliana Wright was left in the care of her mother's boyfriend, Charles Wayne Phifer, in Grand Prairie, Texas. Hours later, paramedics found Leiliana unresponsive with severe injuries. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Authorities ruled her death a homicide. Prosecutors later presented evidence that Leiliana had suffered prolonged abuse before her death, including physical violence and confinement. Her mother, Jeri Quezada, was also charged and later pleaded guilty to felony injury to a child, admitting that she failed to protect her daughter. In October 2018, a Dallas County jury convicted Phifer of capital murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Quezada received a 50-year prison sentence. Leiliana was only four years old. She should have been protected. She should have been safe. Instead, her death became a devastating reminder of what can happen when a vulnerable child is failed by the adults responsible for her care.
