This year for Halloween, we are building a Jurassic Park themed show in our front yard, and the craziest thing that we've done for this build so far was actually to buy a 3D printer because we needed to make this very specific part that you see here. So to back up a step, this year my husband decided that we were going to do a Jurassic Park theme in the front yard, and his concept for the show was that there was going to be a projected show, but it was going to happen behind a giant version of the Jurassic Park fence from the film. The Jurassic Park fence is iconic and it has a lot of really specific parts and pieces and it needs to look like an actual electric fence. And to make it look the way that we needed it to look, we needed 36 of these red insulator pieces. We did try to look into other ways to get these insulator pieces, like buying them from another person who does 3D printing or finding a different way to DIY this part of the project, but at the end of the day, the cheapest way to do this was actually just to buy a brand new 3D printer. Because when you need 36 of something, even if it's not that expensive per item, it still adds up really quickly. And we definitely underestimated how much time these would take to make because it took about six hours for each four pieces that we 3D printed. This means that it took over 50 hours just to 3D print these insulator pieces that we need for our display. But at the end of the day, what makes a big DIY project like ours work really is the details, and I think these turned out pretty good for our first 3D prints.
