I really don't feel comfortable doing this. I've got to be honest. She's fine. Yes, she had a diaper rash like a normal baby does. Newly released bodycam video shows the two small children of 31-year-old Justine May alive during welfare checks made by sheriff's deputies at her home, a month before they were found dead on September 29th. The county coroner determined that the children, ages one-and-a-half and two-and-a-half, died from starvation and dehydration due to neglect, according to CNN affiliate WCIV. May was arrested and charged with two counts of homicide by child abuse, according to the Charleston County Sheriff's Office. So we got our report because after the mom and the kids father separated, her mental health has apparently declined. And no one has seen these kids in over a week. The sheriff's office says deputies had visited May's home ten times between August 25th and September 20th. How old are you? Are you two? Yeah, I'm two-and-a-half. Two-and-a-half, you're a big girl. Some of the calls for welfare checks were made by May's mother and the children's father over concerns about May's mental health, according to police incident reports. So has anybody gone to family court or done, done a petition for custody or anything like that? Right now they're all mine, and that is how it is going to be for now until he decides to take me to court because I do not trust him at all. And so at this point we're worried about you. worried about me? Because of what they've told us. And so we want.. What have they told you? Have you been texting them, are you sending them texts throughout the day? No, they're harassing me. And I've sent in, no, I sent in texts to the police. Yesterday I sent texts from my ex into the police. Can she get to the kids? Because this is like... Thank you. Yeah. the screaming kids. I understand, I wouldn't leave the kids alone. Yeah. They need attention. They do, and I'm clearly not crazy. And no, I've never had any mental health issues. My family is not bothered me, but my mom sent the cops on me yesterday claiming that I'm the Nyx, the goddess of night. Yes, that this will be in your police reports. She sent police to my house yesterday, saying that I'm Nyx, the goddess of night. You didn't tell her that? No. She told the police that. And they showed up at my door. This is what I'm dealing with. Okay. They're crazy. A review of body camera footage showed deputies saw the children with their mother on six of those visits, the sheriff said. 'Based on the available records, deputies did not observe conditions indicating that the children were in immediate danger or that emergency law enforcement intervention was required.' The sheriff's office, which is facing questions about its handling of the case, said in the statement, "On September 22, the decision was made by the on-duty supervisor to discontinue additional welfare checks based on the totality of the information available at that time..." I will not assume that every action was correct. Nor will I assume that mistakes occurred before the facts have been fully examined. If our review identifies shortcomings, we'll absolutely acknowledge them. This investigation is about two young lives that were lost. A family that deserves answers, and a community that deserves confidence in the institution entrusted with protecting it. CNN has reached out to an attorney representing Justine May.
