This is punch needle embroidery. Punch needles are needles where the thread flows through the centre of it and out through the tip. These needles make loops. Usually they're a lot bigger and they use with yarn to make carpet like textures. And that's done with kind of like a running stitch. So you punch your needle down, it creates a loop, you lift your needle, drag the tip across the fabric and punch again and that makes another loop. And those loops don't get pulled out because the fabric weave is keeping everything in place. But personally I prefer to do punch needle satin stitch, and I use these smaller needles that are meant for embroidery thread. So when you're doing punch needle satin stitch, the stitches you're making are a lot longer than the ones that you would do in a running stitch, so the loops aren't big enough to accommodate for that, which means you have to hold each loop individually. So to do that, you punch down, that creates a loop which your fingers hold. I usually push the loop against the fabric cause that makes it a little bit quicker. Then you can move your needle, punch down again, that creates a new loop and that's the one you need to focus on holding now. And then you repeat that process over and over again. And once you move on, the fabric weave keeps everything in place. But you can fix your stitches once you're finished stitching, with some glue or something like that. Which does mean the back can get a little bit bulky. So I only really recommend this technique for wall art. I wouldn't recommend it for clothing. But yeah, that is punch needle satin stitch.
