Could this be the end of the Daily Mail? Let's get into it. The backstory to this is that 17 years ago was the phone hacking scandal. Do you remember that? This was when the News of the World was accused of tapping people's phones. Illegally, it led to absolute carnage with the police getting involved, the Press Complaints Commission getting involved, and eventually led to the Leveson Inquiry which tried to transform the way the press worked. Now, despite all of this, and it's a Rupert Murdoch and his son that ran the newspaper, not really much ultimately happened. A bunch of people resigned, the News of the World ended up being trashed. But did the press really change what they were doing? Roll on 17 years down the line and we potentially have another scandal on our hands because according to a press release that came out today, Sir Elton John, the Duke of Sussex, Baroness Doreen Lawrence, and actress Sadie Frost and Elizabeth Hurley are suing Associated Newspapers Limited. And this has come from the law firm Hamlins, and they said in a statement, Hamlins alleged that the activity against the newspapers included the hiring of private investigators to secretly place listening devices inside people's cars and homes, the commissioning of individuals to surreptitiously listen into and record people's live, private telephone calls whilst they were taking place, the payment of police officials, with corrupt links to private investigators, for inside, sensitive information, the impersonation of individuals to obtain medical information from private hospitals, clinics, and treatment centres by deception, and the accessing of bank accounts, credit histories and financial transactions through illicit means and manipulation. Hamlins added: "It is apparent to these individuals that the alleged crimes listed above represent the tip of the iceberg - and that many other innocent people remain unknowing." Now, a media lawyer who has been previously involved with legal action against Associated Newspapers said the allegations were even more serious than the phone hacking scandal and he goes on to say it is a gross invasion of privacy if these things occurred and it would be absolutely right and proper if they did occur that Associated Newspapers and hopefully some of the senior figures are held to account. The newspaper statement said this: "We utterly and unambiguously refute these preposterous smears which appear to be nothing more than a pre-planned and orchestrated attempt to drag the Mail titles into the phone hacking scandal concerning articles up to 30 years old. These unsubstantiated and highly defamatory claims - based on no credible evidence - appear to be simply a fishing expedition by claimants and their lawyers, some of whom have already pursued cases elsewhere."
