Hook

All right so quick story. I was coming back from a wedding the other night and I missed out on the wedding food so I decided to hit a fast food restaurant. Normally I go through the drive through but for whatever reason I decide to go in. There's nobody in the lobby. I approached the counter and the woman was probably in her mid eighties who is serving me. I asked for something off of the menu and she tried to find it on the touchscreen in front of her. She couldn't see it. So then I pointed to it on the screen behind her and I tried to clarify it for her. She couldn't quite get it. She called her manager over who in 2 seconds was able to type in my order and ring me up. And then she looked a little bit crestfallen but then immediately jumped into conversation with me. How are you doing? Where are you coming from? What are you all dressed up as? Boy it's really coming down out there. Are you okay? And I had this moment and it actually kind of touched me. I think it touched me because she did absolutely everything wrong with my order and obviously none of it was her fault but she was so eager to ensure that I was a customer that she valued. And in contrast the 20 something manager who came over and punched in the keys she was clearly I don't want to say like preoccupied but it was like it was a vacancy. Like she was staring at the paint on the wall behind me. And you know for whatever reason and I don't again I don't try to determine cause or judge what's going on but here were like 2 opposing skill sets. One eager and emotionally intelligent and not able to do the job and the other completely technically competent but absolutely no interpersonal skill or at least none displayed. Right? Who knows what she was actually dealing with. I don't want to be unfair. I got out of that exchange and I thought ideally you would want to be able to do the best from both. But if you had to pick over the next 3 to 5 years if you need to have better technical skills or better interpersonal skills I think it's interpersonal skills. I think it's interpersonal skills by a landslide. I don't think we have the luxury to be only good at asynchronous communication. Like you can talk behind an email you can talk behind a text you can talk behind a Snapchat but you can't talk behind a phone call you can't talk face to face. Whatever you need to do this year get therapy get what do whatever you have to do but learn to be able to communicate and to love one another that's it.
