This is how I started a multi-million Rand advertising company in my 20s in with no experience. It started with a desire when I was studying at Vega. I knew absolutely nothing about business, but was determined to learn. After graduating, I got a job working for a startup in JHB. I just reached out to the founder on IG and was able to hustle an intern role. I worked flat out for a full year in 2019, learning everything possible. I also built relationships with everyone I could. At the end of 2019, this startup closed down. I had to decide if I would start my own thing or get a job. I had 22k in monthly expenses and needed to make a plan (fast). I went into a crazy focus mode, planning how I could sell my time and skills as a way to kickstart a business and cover expenses. I started landing small retainer projects, mostly doing podcasts. This is us recording a podcast with our client in my bedroom 😂 This was the hardest phase because I knew very little about business. I just kept selling, building relationships and making sure I had money to pay my team. I also made sure we delivered great work, which brought us new clients bit by bit. Because you're young, people don't always take you seriously. I remember these guys basically laughing us out the room. All good, back to the drawing board. We refined our offering and started expanding beyond podcasts into social media retainers. I also kept learning with an obsessive focus. I didn't have mentors so I relied on books and podcasts. The social media retainers worked well. We could charge a lot more and finally had revenue to grow. I rented this tiny 1 person office in JHB to really dial in. I would work here by myself from early morning to late at night, all my team members were online. I was able to pay an agency to build our first website. Up till now we didn't have one. Our client base grew and we started creating epic results for the companies who hired us. We started picking up a lot more traction and I could travel to cool places. Seeing Dubai for the first time. Working remotely in Greece. After some really hard work I was even able to buy a new car (this was a crazy feeling).
