Here's how I save 5k a month as a 21 year old software engineer. My gross pay is $10,750. After taxes that's $8,082. I maxed out my Roth 401k and Roth IRA in the first three months so I don't pay anymore into that. Rent is 1639. Wi-Fi, utilities, light are like $200. I spend 400 on food and groceries. Haircuts and retwists cost like 155 a month. Then for fun, I left an extra 1000 to do whatever. So last month I went skiing which was about $200. Then a last minute trip to the Nesby conference in Chicago, so I spent 300 on flights and hotels and then 200 on food. But I used credit card points so it was a lot cheaper. So in general that's about 700 for fun and 2500 for essential expenses. So that's 8000 check, 2500 in expenses, 700 for whatever. That comes out to 4882. But I also get money in a high yield, so that's an extra 3 to 400 dollars. So that's the 8000 check plus the 300 in high yield minus the 3200 in expenses. Including any equity, stocks, or investment gains I get, that brings my monthly savings to $5,182. First gen, I'm super grateful to make so much right out of college and I'm looking forward to making the most of it.
