Michael Burry, the guy from The Big Short who predicted the 2008 crash and 20 of the last three crashes, just made a 1.1 billion dollar short bet against NVIDIA and Palantir, two of the biggest names in AI. But here's what everyone's getting wrong about it. He's not betting against AI, he's betting against faith. Because right now, AI stocks aren't being priced like companies, they're being priced like belief systems. NVIDIA isn't a semiconductor company anymore, it's a cult stock. Palantir isn't selling software, it's selling prophecy. And that works until belief meets gravity. Burry's bet isn't saying AI won't change the world, it's saying even world changing things get over bought. We've hit this point where every earnings call sounds like a sermon. AI this, AI that, and nobody else is checking the math anymore. When people start treating companies like gods, shorting them becomes an act of faith too. Saying that maybe a company that makes 4 billion a year shouldn't be worth 500 billion a year gets you excommunicated in Silicon Valley. However, just because something is expensive doesn't mean you should short it via puts as Burry has. Both Palantir and NVIDIA have high IVs. He's paying for that. Usually you're much better off looking for cheaper puts on securities with enough correlation. Burry infamously made several more bets after The Big Short, bets that misfired. That is, his record is far from being 100% right. Lucky for him, Palantir is down 8% today. Do you think we're in a bubble or on the right path?
