If you're a freshman looking for a software engineering internship, you have to apply to Microsoft's Explore program. They recently opened up applications for first-year students, so make sure to go and apply. Qualifications are you're attending full-time bachelor's degree, must be enrolled in first year of a 4-year undergraduate degree program at time of application, completed an introduction to computer science course or equivalent class as well as one semester of calculus or equivalent by the start of the program. Demonstrated interest in major computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, or related technical major. The base pay range for this internship is USD $25.58 - $47.04 per hour. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for... In terms of what Explore is, you work in a pod with other interns and you spend six weeks in product management, six weeks doing software engineering. This is to give you a range of both experiences in your internship, so that when you return, you can choose the track you want to do. I didn't do Explore, I did the normal software engineering internship, but I know other people who did it and they loved it, and then they returned as a software engineering intern.
