Yann LeCun calls Alexandr Wang "inexperienced"

Yann LeCun thinks that Meta's Alexandr Wang is "inexperienced" and that a staff exodus is coming to Meta. LeCun won the Turing Award for his foundational work on deep learning and spent over a decade at Meta as their Chief AI Scientist. He's also one of three researchers credited with inventing the neural networks that power modern AI. But his final year at Meta was fairly turbulent. The company was accused of fudging its Llama 4 benchmark results and in an interview with the Financial Times, LeCun confirmed that that's basically what actually happened. As a result, Zuckerberg reportedly lost confidence in everyone involved and sidelined the entire Gen AI organization. Meta then dropped $14 billion on Scale AI and hired its 28-year-old co-founder Alexandr Wang to run a new Superintelligence Lab. In doing that, Wang effectively became LeCun's boss. Now, LeCun left Meta back in November, but he recently called Wang 'young' and 'inexperienced,' and saying that there's "no experience with research or how you practice research," LeCun said of the Scale AI cofounder. Here is my favorite part. He also added, "You don't tell a researcher what to do," LeCun told the publication. "You certainly don't tell a researcher like me what to do." And according to LeCun, Meta's new AI team is "completely LLM-pilled," and staying eventually became "politically difficult," for him. Now the context here is that LeCun has been saying that LLMs are a dead end for reaching superintelligence, and he acknowledged that people at Meta, including perhaps Wang, would prefer he stop saying this publicly. And in response to that, LeCun told the Financial Times that he's "not gonna change my mind because some dude thinks I'm wrong. I'm not wrong. My integrity as a scientist cannot allow me to do this."
