Tech Roundup. rundown of everything that happened in tech recently. Duolingo faces backlash for AI courses. Duolingo went AI-first and it's facing backlash. The company launched 148 new courses built with AI while phasing out hundreds of contract workers behind the scenes. I've said this in Q&As and many meetings, but I want to make it official: Duolingo is going to be AI-first. AI is already changing how work gets done. It's not a question of if or when. It's happening now. When there's a shift this big, the worst thing you can do is wait. In 2012, we bet on mobile. While others were focused on mobile composition apps for websites, we decided to build mobile-first because we saw it was the future. That decision helped us win the 2019 iPhone App of the Year and unlocked the organic word-of-mouth growth that followed. Getting on mobile made all the difference. We're making a similar call now, and this time the platform shift is AI. AI isn't just a productivity boost, it helps us get closer to our mission. To teach well, we need to create a massive content creation process. One powered by AI. Without AI, it would take us decades to scale our content to more learners. We owe it to our learners to get them this content ASAP. AI also helps us build features like Video Call that were impossible to build before. For the first time ever, teaching as well as the best human tutors is within our reach. An internal memo confirmed the shift, with teams told to prioritize AI-led development. Now, users have responded with critical reviews and a wave of uninstalls, saying that the quality had dropped and the changes felt really exploitative. It's a reminder that moving fast with AI is one thing, but bringing users along is another. OpenAI's $3 Billion acquisition of Windsurf. OpenAI is in talks to acquire Windsurf for $3 Billion. Windsurf is a YC startup that helps developers build and launch AI apps faster. It's the second deal OpenAI has pursued in the space after a failed attempt to buy Cursor. If it goes through, it gives OpenAI more control over the infrastructure layer powering AI development. OpenAI tests shopping features in GPT. Speaking of OpenAI, they're also testing shopping features inside GPT. Users in the pilot can ask for specific product recommendations and get curated results from GPT. If it scales, this feature moves OpenAI closer to commerce and further into territory owned by Amazon and Google. Meta expands AI across all platforms. Meta AI is now available in Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, and through a new dedicated site at meta.ai. It's voice-enabled, multimodal and pulls from your activity across the Meta ecosystem. The interface feels like a standalone assistant, but it still lives inside Meta's existing apps. This rollout is Meta's clearest move yet to compete directly with tools like GPT. Apple penalized for blocking payment links. A judge ruled that Apple violated a court order by blocking payment links. After its legal battle with Epic, Apple was told to allow developers to direct users to outside payments. Apple responded with adding fees and warnings that made that nearly impossible. The court just ruled that those tactics broke the original injunction. So, Apple still controls the App Store, but its hold on payments is slipping. Figma's new website builder and AI tool. Figma is building a website creator called Figma Sites. The project leaked alongside their new AI App Builder, which turns prompts into functional UI. Together, these two tools suggest that Figma is no longer just focused on design. Instead, it's starting to compete with platforms that let teams ship entire products end to end. Erik Torenberg joins a16z as Partner. Erik Torenberg just joined A16z as a Partner and brought his podcast network with him. Torenberg is the guy who built On Deck and launched Turpentine, which is a network of VC adjacent shows that A16z has now quietly acquired. He says he'll keep hosting -- and now the content sits inside a firm that already runs a pretty polished, founder-focused media machine. Bye! And that's all for now.
