We finally have details on why OpenAI's board fired Sam Altman two years ago, straight from co-founder Ilya Sunder's testimony in a lawsuit against OpenAI. For an entire year before Altman's firing, Sunder had been documenting what he called Altman's consistent pattern of lying, undermining his ex-s and pitting his ex-s against one another. He compiled a 52-page memo and sent it to board members through disappearing emails, fearing Altman would find a way to make them disappear if he found out. The memo also detailed how Altman would tell different executives conflicting stories about OpenAI's future to turn them against each other. And former CTO Mira Miradi even provided with screenshots documenting similar behavior. She and another executive told the board that Alman's leadership emulated to psychological abuse and that he'd never change. And the memo also claimed that Alman was pushed out of his role as president of Yconator for similar behaviors. Some other shocking revelations also include the fact that the OpenAI board learned about ChatGPT's launch from Twitter. And that during the chaos of Alman's removal, Anthropic reached out with an offer to merge with OpenAI and take over leadership, but practical challenges killed that deal quickly. Now the board's biggest mistake during this entire situation was misreading how open AI employees would react. So, submitted that he expected the staff wouldn't feel so strongly about Altman's firing. Instead, hundreds of open AI employees threatened to resign unless he returned and so within 5 days, Sam Altman was back at open AI. Now the deposition had sparked really fierce debate. Some argue that we should demand better from someone building what could become AI. But Altman's defenders here include some of tech's biggest names, while allies like AirB's Brian Chesky helped orchestrate his return to power in 2023. What we do know though is that two years later, Al-Man runs the world's most powerful AI company while everyone who tried to remove him has left.
