6 tips i'd give communication majors looking for a job in marketing
1. choose whether you're going to chase passion or paper early in your career (0-3 years out of college)
you likely can't have both at the same time
tech & finance pay more but are "unsexy" industries
beauty and fashion are "sexy" industries but pay less
2. working at a brand name company gives you instant credibility that can open doors later
working at a smaller company or public sector gives you ownership and bigger scope earlier on
3. what you do outside of your 9-5 impacts your future success
invest time in networking events, going to conferences, pursuing content, or starting a business. these help you develop identity capital and make you a more well rounded candidate for any and all future opportunities
4. apply for awards / career development programs
do your research to find awards and career development programs you're eligible for because this makes you stand out, broadens your network, and legitimizes your pursuit of your craft in marketing
start with: adcolor futures &
cannes can diversity collective
5. don't get a masters degree too soon
masters degrees are your ticket to pivoting into something new after you've had substantial work experience. this will be different for everyone, but having real world experience before going back to school can help you make more informed decisions about your career
6. have fun!
take educated risks, never be afraid to bet on yourself, & like Drake said, "the moment you stop having fun with it, be done with it", do not be afraid to quit (but have a plan!)
