If I wanted to get into marketing today, these are the skills that I'd be obsessed with building. And they're going to make you a much better marketer. First is strategic thinking. Don't just consume marketing, analyze it. Every time you see a campaign, ask yourself: Why this audience? Why this message? Why this creator? Why now? Reverse engineer great marketing. The more you reverse engineer great marketing campaigns, the better your marketing instincts become. Second is creative taste. I think taste is one of the biggest competitive advantages. Study branding, read case studies, visit stores, visit museums, watch films. Good taste comes from exposing yourself to really great creative work. Don't just scroll. Study! Third is data and analytics. Don't just look at the numbers. As a marketer, I think you also need to be able to interpret how the campaign performs. Why did people stop watching it? Why did this hook work? Why did this ad convert? Data makes creativity better. When you can also connect creativity with data. Fourth is presenting ideas. One thing that nobody tells you about marketing is that you're constantly presenting. Whether that's campaigns, strategy decks, creative concepts, or reports. Learning how to communicate your thinking is just as important as having good ideas. Fifth is AI and tech. You don't need to know every tool, but you also should be comfortable learning new ones. I highly recommend starting with Claude, ChatGPT, Canva, Notion AI, Meta Ads, Google Analytics. Adaptability > mastering one tool. The tools will keep changing. Platforms change, algorithms change, AI changes, but these skills will still matter five or even ten years from now. Sixth is organization. Marketing is also project management with creativity. Content, campaigns, feedback, deadlines. Learn how to use amazing tools like Notion, ClickUp, Asana. Organization creates creativity. The more organized you are, the more headspace you have to think creatively. Marketing changes every year. Platforms change, algorithms change, AI changes, but these skills will still matter five or even ten years from now.
