This Pakistani businessman made over 450 trips abroad over 46 years to open markets for his country. Shaikh Muhammad Muneer was born in 1945 in Chiniot, a city known for traders and industrialists. His father built Din, Pakistan's largest raw leather exporters. Then in 1966, when Muneer was 19, it all collapsed. The family sold everything to clear the debt. Muneer considered a job at PIA, but his father told him to start his own business, no matter how small. So Muneer rented a tannery in Karachi, then another. Within a few years, Din Leather became Pakistan's largest finished leather exporter. In 1987, he moved into textiles. The group grew to five spinning units with over 100,000 spindles. Over the next 46 years, he led over 450 trade missions to Europe, the Gulf, and North America, opening markets that didn't exist before. In the early 1990s, the Nawaz Sharif government put MCB Bank, one of Pakistan's largest state-owned banks, up for sale. Five groups bid. Muneer partnered with billionaire Mian Mohammad Mansha, submitted the third-lowest bid, and Muneer took a 10% stake and became vice chairman. MCB became one of Pakistan's most profitable banks.
