I increased my salary from $85,000 to $163,000 in less than four years. So here are five things that I learned about that you should really know. Number one is promises aren't paychecks. You cannot let a company jerk you around. If you ask for a raise under legitimate conditions and they don't take you seriously, then it's time to start looking for a position somewhere else. Number two is that growth can look flat for a really, really long time. Don't be discouraged. Keep your head down, keep working and the results will show at some point in the future. Number three is big raises require movements, usually to different companies. This takes me to point number four, which is you need to repackage your skills into a higher paying industry. So figure out which skills you currently have in your current industry and then look at what are the highest growing industries around you. How to repackage your skills into one of those high growing industries. And number five is set yourself higher than what you think is comfortable. I was guilty of this as well. I wanted a big pay raise, but I was actually underpricing myself. I thought that it would almost be greedy to say that I wanted a 75% plus increase. And if you don't say it and set the limit, then it's never going to happen.
