It's now been 365 days since I suffered the worst injury of my life. I ruptured my patella tendon playing badminton. Badminton of all sports. I'm not going to lie, genuinely, for my life is not going to be the same again. Surgery when I was told it was a 9 to 12 month recovery period at best, I generally couldn't understand or have been. 9 to 12 months just didn't make sense to me, but I quickly started to understand you're going to lose all your strength, all your muscles and your legs and it's going to be a very, very, very tough journey. First few weeks were definitely the most difficult and the most humbling. When those pain blockers were off, oh my goodness, the pain and doing simple movements was so tough. The first few months were very depressed. I imagine not being able to bend your knee as much as you try. For me, fitness and health is a huge part of my life. So I knew I was going to commit to this. I was going to be resilient and I was going to come back quicker than expected. Honestly, that is what I did. Ask any of my friends and family during this process. I was resilient. I was committed. I was in the gym five to six days a week. I didn't care how tough it is. I was determined to get back to where I needed to be. One thing I started to realize about this new rehab journey is that you cannot rush the process. It's literally a day-by-day thing. You just got to keep chipping away at the knee, keep chipping away just keep committed to the process. And the one thing that I'm Diego keeps saying to me is that I'm completing these exercises way quicker than she would expect me to complete them. I'm at a level that she would expect me to be at like seven month mark around three four month mark and honestly, it's just because of my dedication. I was in the gym constantly doing the work, putting in the work, never stopping. mentally and physically it was probably the most challenging year of my life, dealing with thoughts like is your knee ever going to be able to bend again, Are you going to be able to play sports again, Are you going to be able to run again? Those forces were constantly flooding my mind day in day out. Crazy how a split second can dictate what your next 365 days are going to look like, but honestly without that split second, I won't have learned so much about myself, but how resilient I can be, how much I can commit to things that I value. I can confidently go back to playing badminton with a bit of appreciation about playing nevertheless. I've also picked up tennis because my football days are done. And I'm also looking to complete in Dublin's in November, so looking forward to that. It's now been a full year, but the journey is far from all of us. Stay tuned for the next vlog.
