LAS GRUTAS DE TOLANTONGO

Las Grutas de Tolantongo was one of my favorite side quests for visiting Mexico City. The drive is about 3 and a half to 4 hours away from the city depending on traffic. I booked a tour because I personally was not going to be driving all the way out here. An unmarked van picked me up around 4:20 in the morning. I would say group tours are also really nice way to meet people. The pools are breathtaking, they are also incredibly warm because they are heated by volcanic activity in the area. Because of the amazing temperature of the water, I would definitely suggest covering any cuts with some film. But they do clean out the pools pretty regularly. Essential items to bring are your own toilet paper or wipes, a microfiber large towel, and some water shoes. In my opinion, the pool farthest from the entrance is where you get the best pictures. There are other areas to explore, there's a zip line which I did not do, but there's this bridge that leads to this little tunnel cave. You can kind of just walk through it. It's like a choose your own adventure. There is a restaurant right by the pools. They get most, if not all, their ingredients on site. In my opinion, the pool farthest from the entrance is where you get the best pictures. The next place left me absolutely breathless. It's a giant waterfall and cave. It looks so beautiful. It's hard to believe it's real, even when you're standing there. This is where a waterproof case would come in handy, but I didn't bring mine, so my phone had to row-dog the water. The water was ankle deep in some places and chest deep in others. There is not a single bad view in this entire place. And you can even get a free back massage. There are these really fluffy cute raccoon kitty things that are everywhere. And it's common sense. Don't touch them. They are cute to look at though. I will say. Low key, the river is my favorite part of this whole place. When I come back, I hope it's just me and my phone on DND and I can spend two days hanging out in these waters. Next time I do want to hit up the campground and stay there. That way I can take my time. There are plenty of snacks and drinks in the area. Everything a girl needs. I just can't wait to come back.
