How to get into the Construction Industry Is going to college/getting a degree worth it? If you're new here I'm Edith, a construction engineering student working full time as a Project Coordinator Is college worth it? here's what I think based on my personal experience I started with 0 knowledge about how the industry works! Baby me my first semester of college (she had no clue in the world) I knew nothing about the industry Industry exposure via classroom instruction and activities really helps introduce what Construction has To offer. There are career paths for EVERYONE. To name a few: - Project Management (duh) - Construction Management (yes, theres a difference) - Administration (my job currently) - Finance - Estimating - Safety - Accounting College focuses on the overall process of construction from start to finish As well as key terminology you encounter throughout your career College focuses on the overall process of construction from start to finish As well as key terminology you encounter throughout your career Research! Please look into trades, subcontractors, engineering firms etc. don't be afraid to start "small" & grow within a company Though you may not NEED a degree to break into the industry, it depends on what you WANT to do. There are harder paths without the appropriate education, qualifications Certifications: Courses will help but I'd suggest these ALONGSIDE a degree. Not just on their own. My goals: Education: AS, CM BASC Construction Engineering MS Structural Engineering Certifications: OSHA 10 OSHA 30 EIT & PE Licensure Pathway showing off my grad cap like a car edit My goals: Education: AS, CM BASC Construction Engineering MS Structural Engineering Certifications: OSHA 10 OSHA 30 EIT & PE Licensure Pathway Is school WORTH IT? 100000% Yes +++ Try school online if you can't go in person! I'm a parent so I know how hard it can be! Nowadays there are so many flexible options such as earning a degree online! National University: ASU! Education is what YOU make it! You don't need a degree. It's possible to enter this industry without it & work your way up. No experience & no school vs No experience but School A. - No direct path into PM, CM - Likely needs to start as laborer, assistant super, entry level safety - Office roles such as receptionists, assistants, etc -work your way up B. - With an AS BS like entry point can be Project Engineer, Field Engineer, Jr Estimator, Project Administration, Project Coordinator - Work directly under Project Managers and Senior Management Pros of schooling always outweigh any Cons! Education will always serve its purpose no matter what industry you're in Don't be discouraged! We all start somewhere
