End of the year, boss sits me down, compensation, compensation review time. I get the typical corporate speech. No budget. We did everything we could. Maybe next year. Whatever. What I didn't expect was, that directly after that meeting, he was gonna have to deliver my direct reports compensation. Cause I was a new manager. He didn't expect I was gonna be in the room. And he says, "You did a great job this year. You get a 20% increase." Excuse me, what? That was the moment that I realized performance has so little to do with your raise and your compensation. They're about pay band, retention rates, market adjustments. But companies won't tell you that. So high performers walk out that they need to do more. Let me know if you've seen this happen before.
