After you have a baby, these are the first financial moves that you need to do. Number one, register the birth and claim child benefit. You have 42 days to register the birth, and then once you've done that, you can claim the benefit. For your first child, that's over £1,400 per year. Number two, open a Junior ISA. This is basically a child's long-term investment account. You can put in up to £9,000 a year, the money grows tax-free, and they get access when they turn eighteen, which sounds terrifying because obviously at 18 they might buy a financed BMW, but use properly, this is one of the best head starts that you can give them. Number three, get life insurance. Before kids, life insurance might feel optional, but after kids, it stops being an inconvenience and becomes one of the most important ways that you can protect your family. Because if something terrible happens to you, your family still has to pay the mortgage, bills, childcare, and everything else. Number four, update your will and name a guardian. Nobody wants to think about this, but if both parents die, you do not want a court raising your child because you never wrote it down. Choose the person and put it in the will. Number five, rebuild your budget because babies aren't a one-off, they add a whole new subscription to your entire life. Nappies, clothes, formula, nursery, random Amazon orders. So don't wait until you feel the squeeze, update the budget before the baby becomes a surprise monthly expense. Not financial advice, just five things that I think every new parent should at least look into.
