When I was planning this trip to Thunder Bay, I had quite the itinerary. A cruise on Lake Superior. Long hiking days. Sunrise and sunset adventures. Basically, I was hoping to spend as much time outside as possible. Then day two arrived... ...and so did the fog. Not just a little fog either. The kind where you can barely see a few metres ahead. Every local I talked to kept saying the same thing: “I’ve never seen it this bad.” And the craziest part? It never really left for the rest of my trip. At first, I was disappointed. I kept looking at my carefully planned itinerary and crossing things off one by one. But sometimes the best travel memories come from the plans you didn’t make. Instead of spending every day on the trails, I wandered through local markets, discovered cozy cafés I’d happily spend an entire morning in, found some incredible restaurants, chatted with locals, and explored a completely different side of Thunder Bay than the one we usually see on Instagram. And honestly... I’m kind of grateful the weather forced me to slow down. Do I still have a list of things I want to come back for? Absolutely. But that’s one of my favourite things about travelling, you don’t have to see everything in one trip. It just means I already have a good reason to come back to Thunder Bay and experience everything the fog kept hidden this time around. So if you’re planning a trip to Thunder Bay, here’s the itinerary I’d recommend, whether the sun is shining or the fog decides to make an appearance. And if you’re new here, hi! 👋 I’m Marie. I spend way too much time planning Ontario road trips so you don’t have to. Have you ever had bad weather completely change a trip?
